After reading how the author couldn't tell what was the truth and what wasn't with the stories he told over and over and over again I grew tired of the story and wanted to see how it ended. And even the ending wasn't original, but at least he was inspired by one of the authors mentioned in his press releases. If you're interested in adventure/travel stories using motorcycles I'd highly recommend reading anything by Mark "Tiger" Edmunds. He teaches a course I wish I'd taken in school, the Literature of the Open Road, and has written four books about his travels on his BMW motorcycle. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the BMW national rally about 15 years ago and heard him read from a few of his books. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Jupiter's Travels are both excellent too. Ted Simons mentions he found what he was looking for in Jupiter's Travels after he realized he didn't want to be like the people he met that were traveling to get away from something, and knew that the people that were traveling somewhere were the ones to emulate. I hope Woodrow Landfair has figured this out by now.

The repetition becomes old quickly. A change of words does not help. The story could have been told in a chapter.
Land of the free was completely captivating and kept me reading to the very last page. The fact that it is extremely well written and organized definitely benefited the complexity of the storyline. The characters are very well developed.
Overall, I was extremely happy with this book and I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family.
Bordering on an autobiographical journey across America's heartland and a true American novel, I was not able to put this book down. The book captured my imagination and made me feel as if I was the one on the motorcycle, making my way across America. The author lets you experience his joy in his freedom of movement, and his struggle in his hard times. A great read from front to back!
I wasn't sure what I would experience when I picked up this book. Being the curious person that I am, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the adventure locked within these pages. From start to finish, my mind was trapped by the story and the slew of characters presented. They were all memorable in their own way and I loved following the main character around on his travels. It even makes me want to do something similar... heck, I'd even get a motorcycle! *smiles*
Beyond just a great story and adventure, the book was also very well written and easy to understand. There was nothing in the writing itself that pulled me out of the story. It was wonderful.
Land of the Free is a captivating adventure through the continental 48. Reminiscent of the Beat Generation, Author Woodrow Landfair rekindles the free spirit in us all. Landfair packs up a few necessities, gets on his used motorcycle and hits the road with the goal of discovering America. He holds numerous small time jobs from short order cook to selling fireworks to earn a way to keep moving forward. Everyone he meets sees Landfair as something different. Every town Landfair visits has its own imprint on America. Through his journey Landfair is able to appreciate what is special and unique about our country and its people. For an unparalleled experience of love, suspense, adventure, hope and redemption, I highly recommend it!
“You are only as big as the dream you dare to live” unknown
Many of us wake up every day with the same routine going to work 9-5, drive around to complete some errands, eat dinner, watch tv, and go to sleep all to wake up and do the same thing again tomorrow. How many of us long to leave the monotonous cycle that we are stuck in? How many of us dare to go and live life according to no one’s rules? Not many people have the heart to just walk away and find themselves. So, for the 95% of us that are afraid to do this, Woodrow Lanfiar has written this thought provoking book, to let you get a taste what life would be like to walk away from it all. I was able to free my own self, by living vicariously through Lanfiar, as we journeyed from one place to the next. Each obstacle that he faced and everything that he felt, I could feel straight through him. Thank you for taking me on this wonderful ride around my country and away from my daily routine. I highly recommend this book.
As one who wants to travel but cannot due to circumstances I was given, I very often like to read books about people who traveled a lot. After reading this book, I later realized that this is not from someone who traveled but was from someone who journeyed a lot. This is not about how beautiful the scenes are but it is about how life can be so lying and cruel. I love the author's quote on a chapter which goes something like, "Truth be told, I don't know anything, specially about myself". This for me summarizes the whole mentality of the author when he made this journey. He was at that point in his life when one doesn't know why, how or where he is led by his life. I believe that throughout the book, he was just drifting by and I have not read anyone who influenced his life majorly. This is a reflection of our modern life, not just in the west, but throughout the world. Life is a journey, and if you have nobody then you're just drifting.
